How to make your arts project happen

Putting together a youth arts project is an awesome way to show people how you feel about the world and what you can do when you get creative.

For starters have a look at our 2008 listing of organisations involved with creativity and young people in regional WA here.

After you get a great idea and get some of other young people together to make it happen, this is what you need to think about next.

  • Who else can you get involved?
  • What venue will you use?
  • Who will do what in your project group?
  • Who can you get to inspire you? Some sources of inspiration are available here
  • Talk to people who have experience doing what you want to do. Check out these contacts
  • Put together a time line.
  • Get quotes for everything – artist fees, accommodation, material costs etc For funding contacts hit this link .
  • Decide which costs need funding and what things can be donated, like time and skills, venue, materials or equipment.
  • Get a local organisation or corporation to auspice your project (this means that they will hold all of the money associated with your project in their bank account).
  • Ask for help putting together a grant application. Tips on putting together a funding application here (a Microsoft Word Document).
  • Make sure that the artists you plan to work with have current Working with Children checks and Police Clearances before they start workshops. Go to www.checkwwc.wa.gov.au/default.htm
  • Once you have the money, start promoting your project. Good ideas for promoting your project here
  • Check that the workshop venue is available and ready to go, and that participants know what time to be there.
  • Keep a working budget. You will need to compare this to your actual budget later.
  • Showtime!! Make sure that you have done enough promotion so your community knows when and where to see your amazing creation!! Don’t forget to thank everyone.
  • Acquit your money. Don’t forget to include a report about what went on, a final report against the budget and some photos. Tips on acquittals here .
